‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?
Light therapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. There are now available illuminated devices targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and gum disease, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device equipped with tiny red LEDs, described by its makers as “a major advance in personal mouth health.” Globally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. Based on supporter testimonials, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, relieving inflammation and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.
The Science and Skepticism
“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a neuroscience expert, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Certainly, we know light influences biological functions. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Different Light Modalities
While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and infrared light visible through night vision technology.
Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight
The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “The evidence is there,” says Ho. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – although, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Unless it’s a medical device, oversight remains ambiguous.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
At the same time, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he states. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, but over 20 years ago, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he explains. “I was pretty sceptical. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”
Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is generally advantageous.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. At controlled levels these compounds, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
